Open Research Lab

By running an Open Research Lab at Deutsches Museum we addressed the question of how methods of natural science and the way of scientific thinking can be communicated to the general public. We went beyond imparting just scientific results by developing and action methods to provide an understanding of processes of scientific research and thus to enhance the public understanding of research.

The concept brought the day-to-day life of our team into the museum. Visitors could enjoy the rare opportunity to discuss with scientists and pose questions: how does one go about obtaining new scientific insights? What is being researched at the moment? What is the average day in the life of a scientist like? Scientists can recount from their own experience why it is that they enjoy research and how one becomes a scientist.

Student Lab

We qualified pupils as course instructors for teaching other pupils how to systematically become familiar with a complex scientific instrument and how to analyse and discuss the obtained data in a professional scientific way.

We realised this peer-to-peer education approach by establishing a Student Lab equipped with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). the courses were conducted in collaboration with the TUMlab of the Technical University Munich.

Events

By contributing to various events we try to raise the awareness in the general public that science is, in essence, a special way of thinking. We show strange physical effects for demonstrating how to observe, discuss and conclude systematically for exploring the unknown nature of phenomena.

We contribute e.g. to the annual StuStaCulum festival, NIM NanoDay and TEDx TUMSalon.
